Abstract
When bone loss is present around a dental implant, advanced diagnosis and treatment are necessary. Excess cement is a known cause of peri-implant disease and should be ruled out as a first step. If cement is present, it should be removed with a curette, not an ultrasonic scaler. The dental endoscope can aid the clinician with cement removal using a non-surgical approach. Occasionally, surgical access with a videoscope is necessary for cement removal and/or treatment of the implant surface. Surgical treatment that is not aimed at regeneration is similar to osseous surgery around natural teeth. This is a predicable approach but yields unaesthetic results. Regeneration of bone and re-osseointegration of the implant is unpredictable and the surgical methods used are controversial.
