Impact of 810nm diode laser, intraoral and extraoral applications, on postoperative pain, swelling, wound healing, and patient satisfaction following mandibular third molar extraction: a comparative study

Abstract

Purpose

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an 810 nm diode laser, intraoral and extraoral, on postoperative pain, swelling, wound healing, and patient satisfaction after mandibular third molar extraction.

Methods

Fifteen patients (9 females, 6 males; mean age 26.84 ± 3.61 years) were included in the study. All patients underwent simultaneous extraction of impacted mandibular third molars under general anesthesia. Pain scores, swelling, wound healing, and patient satisfaction were assessed on the two sides. The laser sides received intraoral and extraoral irradiation using a 810 nm laser (100mW, 10.6 J/cm²) continuously for three days, while the control sides received a placebo laser.

Results

Except for the 6-h postoperative point, pain scores were significantly lower on the laser sides compared to the control sides (P < 0.05). Patient satisfaction was significantly higher on the laser sides at 1 and 3 days postoperatively (P < 0.05), and the healing condition was superior on the laser sides (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in swelling between the two sides (P > 0.05).

Conclusion

The study findings suggest that one application laser intraoral and extraoral post-extraction followed by three consecutive daily applications of 810 nm diode can effectively reduce postoperative pain, promote wound healing, and improve patient satisfaction.
