POP culture: the increasing perils of publish or perish. A farewell from the Editors in Chief

Publish or perish is a phrase that will be familiar to all surgeons, from trainee through to leading professors of learned institutions. It describes the pressure to publish in scholarly journals rapidly and continually as a condition for career progression or maintenance of one’s position. Although publication has no co-location with professional interaction, clinical judgement, or technical competence the doctrine is laudable. A good track record of publications brings attention to the author and their institution and allows identification based on merit in this area rather than favouritism. It also motivates surgeons early in their careers, often because publication features on scoring matrices of selection panels or it is well known that interviewers will likely appoint “people like us”, rather than a genuine enthusiasm for early career research. However, there are inherent issues with this doctrine that have become evident in our experience as co-editors in chief. As we both come to the end of our tenure, we felt it would be helpful to give our readers some insight into this intriguing role we have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed, and highlight some of our concerns over this ‘POP culture’. …
